Tonight’s episode is a trip: We’ll take off from the streets of Boston, wake-up in Israel, and end up in LA. The whole time, we’ll ensure that you have a quality soundtrack to keep you going. Andy Grammer

Our guest is Andy Grammer. We played on of his songs (Touch) on the last show. Andy’s music could most closely be compared to John Mayer or Jack Johnson; though he is in the same vein, he definately stands out with his own unique style. We talked about the future of the music industry, songwriting, and surviving in LA.

We also have two new artists for you. The first is Badi. He’s a rapper from Boston who has been working with Jon Rezin at NextMovement records to create hip hop that works on the radio or in the club, but still has a little something a little deeper going on.

We follow-up with music from the Dawnbreaker Collective. The collective is 17 musicians from LA who are at the top of their game. Their styles range from Hip-Hop to Accoustic, and everything in between. It was hard to pick one track to play…they all are really solid. Look for more of their music in coming shows…

This podcast also contains background music by Kevin MacLeod (http://incompetech.com): Comfortable Mystery

Things have been quiet for a while here, but don’t worry; we’re busy behind the scenes.

We’re working on five live concert recordings from INRS, and a new show is finishing production. Our next guest will be Andy Grammer, whose music you heard on the last show. He was recently in DC, and dropped by to give a concert/interview.

We owe you some new material…so in the mean time heres a live track from Andy:

Listen:Aaron Emmel's Book

Summer is drawing to a close here in DC. The heat is finally starting to taper off a bit, and everyone just seems a little more chilled out. Its in this spirit that we present show number 8.

Our artists this evening both hail from LA. Their music is the perfect fit for your end of summer soundtrack.

Our first artist is Ferraby Lionheart. Ferraby’s style is a unique type of pop along the lines of Elliot Smith and Nick Drake. He has been generating some major buzz this year. Spin Magazine listed him as an artist to watch and he is releasing his major label debut, Catch The Brass Ring, on September 4th.

Oh, did also I mention he also was on the Late Late Show on CBS this week?

Next up is Andy Grammer. I think he embodies what California would sound like if it were a song: Sunny, Upbeat, and exciting. Those of you lucky enough to live in LA can catch him doing gigs all around the city. He is one hardworking guy, constantly putting his music out there. I have no doubt you will hear more about him in the future…his music is that good.

Our interview is with Aaron Emmel. He is the first author we’ve had on the show. His new book, Taking Action in a Changing World is a manual for how to start your own development project. For those of us wanting to change the world, Aaron has done the groundwork to help us understand what makes these projects successful. This is not just another book about development…Aaron has taken insights from his faith (the Baha’i Faith) and shown how a spiritual approach to development can allow projects to be more successful. His approach to development looks at the nobility of the human spirit, and focuses on a principle called consultation.

We are still working on the other live broadcasts from INRS. We will be sure to post those up as soon as they are ready!

This podcast also contains background music by Kevin MacLeod (http://incompetech.com): Acid Jazz.

Listen:

We have a rare treat for you. Anis Mojgani (2005/2006 National Poetry Slam Champion, Def Poetry Jam) came through DC to perform at the University of Maryland. While in the area, he dropped by INRS to give a small concert and talk about the role of Spirituality in his work.

These concerts happen once a month. Kelly opens up the studio, Ed and Sharona bring the food, Kat hosts, and people crowd in to hear whoever the performer of the evening is. The crowd is always really diverse: young, old, musician, lawyer, teacher, DJ…you never know who you will run into. It’s really exciting to see just how powerful the combination of music and spirituality can be.

We’re planning to broadcast more of these evenings going forward, in addition to still producing the full Nextlevel Radio podcasts. Watch in the near future for other performances, such as Luke Slott and Elizabeth Hai.

INRS is an amazing new studio in DC run by Kelly, a NASA scientist by day, and music producer by night. Her little studio on U St. packs an amazing punch, and her production is top notch.</p> <p>Our first song this evening is by a group called the Secret Buttons, titled <u>The Watchman</u>. The song embodies elegance…it is simple, yet very moving. It retells the classic Sufi love story of Layli and Majnoon. It is a beautiful metaphor for the individual’s search for truth.</p> <p>We continue with <a href="http://www.divinenotes.com/albums/UnrestrainedastheWind/DDB17F59-A997-030C-90E8-1E1B2DC12F29">John Hicks</a> . John takes a passage from the Baha’i writings about sacrifice, and places it into a really neat composition. Its hard to explain the style without hearing it; all I know is that I really like it.</p> <p>Finally, our guest tonight is <a href="http://www.myspace.com/lukeslott">Luke Slott</a>. He’s an amazing guy. His music is beautiful, he plays at a multitude of instruments, was signed to a major label deal before he was even out of high school. All that aside, he’s also one of the most humble guys I’ve ever had the chance to meet.</p> <p>Look out in coming weeks when we will have a full Broadcast of Luke’s performance in Washington DC…</p> <p>This podcast also contains background music by Kevin MacLeod (<a href="http://incompetech.com/">http://incompetech.com</a>): Acid Jazz, Comfortable Mystery.</p> <div class="post-info"> </div> <div class="post-footer"> </div> </div> </div> <div class="post"> <p class="post-date">Wed 17 Jan 2007</p> <div class="post-info"><h2 class="post-title"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=23" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link: One Year Strong">One Year Strong</a></h2> Posted by Will under <a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?cat=3" rel="category">Podcast</a><br/><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=23#respond">No Comments</a> </div> <div class="post-content"> <p><strong>Listen:</strong> <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-content/plugins/audio-player/player.swf" width="290" height="24" id="audioplayer6"><param name="movie" value="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-content/plugins/audio-player/player.swf" /><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=6&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xFF8A00&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=0xCFDF1B&rightbghover=0x999999&righticon=0x666666&righticonhover=0xffffff&text=0x666666&slider=0xCFCFCF&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xFF2F2F&soundFile=http%3A%2F%2Fnextlevelradio.org%2Fnlr01%2Faudio%2Fnxtlvlrd_Show5.mp3" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="menu" value="false" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></p> <p>Hard to Believe, but NLR is close to celebrating its 1 year anniversary already. Laura is an accomplished musician from Minneapolis who released an excellent solo album this year. Her music blends rock, pop, and electronica to create a beautiful sound with some truly soul-stirring lyrics.</p> <p>As always, we have new artists and music. Our first artist, Kelsey Bulkin, was featured on our last show with her song, Soldier of Light. Her newest song, Rosemary, has a more indy-alternative sound. This song has been in heavy rotation on the MP3 player ever since I first heard it.</p> <p>Finally, we have music from Katherine Key. Katherine is an artist I met here in DC. She has put out an amazing album (Intone) which spans from Latin jazz to downtempo and everything in between. Her song “Trees of my Garden” has it all: spiritual lyrics and some incredible production.</p> <p>Music played during the Laura Harley interview (in order, unannounced): Sharpshooter (from her previous band Sliver), Shine, Sing Out Loud, Stars Light.</p> <p>This podcast also contains background music by Kevin MacLeod (<a href="http://incompetech.com/">http://incompetech.com</a>): Acid Jazz, Highlight Reel.</p> <div class="post-info"> </div> <div class="post-footer"> </div> </div> </div> <div class="post"> <p class="post-date">Wed 1 Nov 2006</p> <div class="post-info"><h2 class="post-title"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=22" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link: Guess who’s back?">Guess who’s back?</a></h2> Posted by Will under <a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?cat=3" rel="category">Podcast</a><br/><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=22#respond">No Comments</a> </div> <div class="post-content"> <p><strong>Listen:</strong> <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-content/plugins/audio-player/player.swf" width="290" height="24" id="audioplayer7"><param name="movie" value="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-content/plugins/audio-player/player.swf" /><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=7&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xFF8A00&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=0xCFDF1B&rightbghover=0x999999&righticon=0x666666&righticonhover=0xffffff&text=0x666666&slider=0xCFCFCF&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xFF2F2F&soundFile=http%3A%2F%2Fnextlevelradio.org%2Fnlr01%2Faudio%2Fnxtlvlrd_Show4_B.mp3" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="menu" value="false" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></p> <p><font size="2"><font size="2"><font size="2">This show has been a long time in the making. It was started back in New Jersey sometime in July, and was put on hold in August when the move happened.  Since the move, it has taken a while for everything to settle down. I caught up with him in NYC when he was doing a reading this summer.  </font></font></font><font size="2"><font size="2"><font size="2">New York is a funny place because you always see celebrities walking around. Thus, its kind of a game to figure out who the celebrity is who just walked by. Since we were doing this interview in a public place, people kept stopping and trying to figure out who Anis was. You’ll hear New York in all its glory in the interview; we recorded live in the middle of Union Square.</font></font></font></p> <p><font size="2"><font size="2"><font size="2">As always, we have new artists this evening. The first is Kelsey Bulkin. Kelsey is a musician in California who has a really nice sound. This is just the type of music I needed to really pick me up on a lazy fall day.</font></font></font><font size="2"><font size="2"><font size="2"> </font></font></font></p> <p><font size="2"><font size="2"><font size="2">Our next artist is Katie Cook. Well, lets just say things have gotten a little interesting:</p> <p>About 3 weeks ago I was in the midst of preparing show 4 (more about that in a bit), when I got contacted about a new job in Washington DC. Its pretty much my dream job, working for XM Satellite Radio (in their IT department, not as a DJ). During what have been what I can only describe as four of the craziest weeks of my life I ended up interviewing, getting an offer, and finding a place to live in DC. So, we’re in a mad rush picking up shop and moving to DC.</p> <p>To give you a preview of show 4, it will definately be worth the extra wait. A couple weeks ago, I hopped a train to Manhattan to catch Anis Mojgani doing a poetry slam live. We ended up meeting afterwards on Union Square, and did an interview, which I can’t wait to broadcast. He also let us record a special reading live for the interview. Also, I have new music from a bunch of artists, including one who actually came over to the Next Level studio and cut her demo.</p> <p>Please bear with us as we move, and get everything settled. Once things calm down a bit we should be back to our regular release schedule.</p> <div class="post-info"> </div> <div class="post-footer"> </div> </div> </div> <div class="post"> <p class="post-date">Sat 22 Jul 2006</p> <div class="post-info"><h2 class="post-title"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=20" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link: Changes">Changes</a></h2> Posted by Will under <a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?cat=2" rel="category">Dev</a> , <a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?cat=3" rel="category">Podcast</a><br/><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=20#comments">1 Comment</a> </div> <div class="post-content"> <p>Just a quick update about whats going on here at NLR:</p> <p>Looking at our web stats we have had listeners from every single continent on the planet which is not covered in iceburgs permanently.</p> <p>Work has begun on volume 4. Their album has found critical acclaim in the New York Times, and once you hear it you will understand why. The music builds on the best of traditional Colombian styles, and fuses it with the dynamite production of Grammy Award Winning Producer KC Porter. Istvan and Leonor tell us the story of their music, all the way from Hungary to Cuba, Columbia, Paris, and back again. They also explain the concept of “cultural ecology”, and how globalization is threatening to squash it, unless something is done. As an added bonus, Leonor also performs a song live during the interview.</p> <p>For the first time on the show we also are playing the work of a slam poet. His name is Anis Mojgani, and he was the 2005 National Poetry Slam Champion. I heard him two years ago at the Baha’i Center in New York, and was blown away by his poetry. His performance is brimming with energy, and speaks to the current condition of humanity.</p> <p>Also, you will hear music from Jon Paul Duvall. He’s an electronic music producer whose tracks range from Trance, Drum N Bass, and even downtempo. Jon describes composing music as “exploring the spiritual landscapes of [his] soul and finding ways to illustrate those inner journeys with sound and rhythm.” I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did.</p> <p>Tracks Played during the interview (unannounced): Posee un Corazon(audio excerpt for intro), No Te Aflijas, and La Rosa del Amor. All selections are from Lenor and Istavan’s album Amame.</p> <div class="post-info"> </div> <div class="post-footer"> </div> </div> </div> <p align="center"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?author=2&paged=2" >Next Page »</a></p> </div> <div id="sidebar"> <h2>Welcome to NLR<div id="currentshow">  <!-- Wordpress XSPF_Player Plugin v. 3.1, by Boriel :-) --> <span id="xspf_player0"> <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-content/plugins/xspf_player/musicplayer.swf?autoload=true&b_fgcolor=FFFFFF&b_bgcolor=FE0000&playlist_url=http%3A%2F%2Fnextlevelradio.org%2Fnlr01%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fxspf_player%2Fplaylist.php?cat%3D2" width="17" height="17" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0"> <param name="movie" value="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-content/plugins/xspf_player/musicplayer.swf?autoload=true&b_fgcolor=FFFFFF&b_bgcolor=FE0000&playlist_url=http%3A%2F%2Fnextlevelradio.org%2Fnlr01%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fxspf_player%2Fplaylist.php?cat%3D2" /> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> </object> </span> </div></h2> <ul> <li> Press the arrow above to hear the most recent show.</li><br></br><li><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?p=7" title="ITunes Subscribe">Click here</a> to learn how to subscribe to the podcast. </li> </ul> <h2>Contributors</h2> <ul> <li><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?author=2" title="Posts by Will">Will</a> (13)</li></ul> <h2>Pages</h2> <ul><li class="page_item page-item-30"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?page_id=30">Featured Artists</a></li> <li class="page_item page-item-2"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?page_id=2">About</a></li> </ul> <h2><label for="s">Search</label></h2> <ul> <li> <form id="searchform" method="get" action="/nlr01/index.php"> <div style="text-align:center"> <p><input type="text" name="s" id="s" size="15" /></p> <p><input type="submit" name="submit" value="Search" /></p> </div> </form> </li> </ul> <h2>Categories</h2> <ul> <li class="cat-item cat-item-2"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?cat=2">Dev</a> (2) </li> <li class="cat-item cat-item-3"><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?cat=3">Podcast</a> (12) </li> </ul> <h2>RSS Feeds</h2> <ul> <li> <a title="RSS2 Feed for Posts" href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?feed=rss2">Posts</a> | <a title="RSS2 Feed for Comments" href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/?feed=comments-rss2">Comments</a></li> </ul> <h2>Meta</h2> <ul> <li><a href="http://nextlevelradio.org/nlr01/wp-login.php">Log in</a></li> <li><a href="http://validator.w3.org/check/referer" title="This page validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional">Valid <abbr title="eXtensible HyperText Markup Language">XHTML</abbr></a></li> <li><a href="http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/check/referer" title="valid css">Valid CSS</a></li> <li><a href="http://gmpg.org/xfn/"><abbr title="XHTML Friends Network">XFN</abbr></a></li> <li><a href="http://wordpress.org/" title="Powered by WordPress, state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform.">WordPress</a></li> </ul> </div> <p id="footer">Vanillamist Design adapted by Pieter Ruiter, <a href="http://www.indigored.com" title="indigored">www.indigored.com</a><br><br> <!-- Site Meter --> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://s25.sitemeter.com/js/counter.js?site=s25nextlevelradio"> </script> <noscript> <a href="http://s25.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=s25nextlevelradio" target="_top"> <img src="http://s25.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=s25nextlevelradio" alt="Site Meter" border="0"/></a> </noscript> <!-- Copyright (c)2006 Site Meter --><br> <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/nextlevelradio"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/nextlevelradio?bg=CFDF1B&fg=444444&anim=1" alt="" width="88" height="26" border="0" align="middle" style="border:0" /></a> </p></div> </div> </body> </html>
